We are located at the foot of the highest mountain range in Continental Portugal, Serra da Estrela, surrounded by historical villages, nature, culture, gastronomy and many other activities. It's a place for hiking lovers, adventurers, family outings and for those who want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city or from the daily worries. Check out a few recommendations that we selected for you, the rest we'll let you to discover by yourself!

Serra da Estrela

At 1,993 metres at its highest point in Torre, Serra da Estrela is an area of rare landscape beauty, with striking mountain drops, where you can have a deep experience of the silence of the heights. Take advantage of those moments of communion with nature to observe it, discovering the diversity of plants and birds and the flocks of sheep herded by Estrela dogs from the breed named after the Mountain. From Lugar da Pedra Alta you are only an hour away by car to the highest peak of the mountain.

Folgosinho

Located Iess than 15 minutes by car from Lugar da Pedra Alta, Folgosinho is a small but charming typical village of the Portuguese serra. Overseen by the tiny medieval castle made of white-pink quartz stone, and a wonderful panoramic view, Folgosinho deserves a little stop during your stay.

if you are looking for a restaurant with rustic atmosphere and Portuguese traditional food we recommend you to try O Albertino right in the heart of the village. 

Melo

Melo is an old village located 30 minutes walk from our Lugar da Pedra Alta. This mountain village has a rich historical past, full of culture and wonderful natural landscapes. Walking through the narrow streets, you will find beautiful traditional stone houses and welcoming locals, which will greet you with a big smile.

This is also the place where the famous Portuguese writer Vergílio Ferreira was born.

A mandatory stop is at the Ethnological Museum of Melo, where you will find Luís Filipe, a passionate and extraordinary artist who since 1999 opened this cultural space where you can observe "examples of the tools that the traditional carpenter used, handicrafts alluding to this art, such as wooden reproductions of historical monuments from Melo" and much more!

PS. If you find the museum closed, then knock on the artist's garage door because he is always there working on new meticulous and impressive artworks

 

 For lunch or dinner, you have to stop at the best pizzeria in the region - Pão Lourinho Melo (this is not just advertising, it's really true, everyone goes there!). The owners, Senhor Chico and Dona Céu, prepare their pizza with such care and love! While you wait for the food, take a look at the wonderful wooden sculptures scattered around the restaurant, made by the chef himself, which you can take as souvenirs from Serra da Estrela.

Gouveia

We are located less than 10 minutes by car from Gouveia, the largest city in the area, also called "The Princess of Serra" . Here you can find restaurants, bars, cafes, supermarkets, museums and cinema.

During summer, the city is filled with outdoor activities and various concerts. Don't miss Festas do Senhor do Calvário, which takes place between the 11th and 15th of August throughout the city!

Nabainhos & Nabais

The end of the afternoon is reserved for a short walk to Nabainhos and Nabais, located 15-20 minutes walking from our Lugar da Pedra Alta. The typical mountain villages, with old stone houses and breathtaking panoramic views, deserve to be visited and admired even for a couple of minutes.
